Buying Property in Crete - Tax Number
In order to do almost anything in Greece you need a tax number. You need one to open a bank account, buy a house, buy a car, sign a mobile phone contract..... The list is endless.
It is a simple process to obtain one. There is a Tax Office in every major town. In our area they are in Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra and Sitia. We will, of course, take care of the process for you or with you as it can be daunting to fill in a form which is written in Greek and deal with the tax office staff who may speak only Greek.
The things we need to be able to complete this process are
- A photocopy of your current passport
- A photocopy of your birth certificate. This must be a full birth certificate showing your parents' names. The reason for this is that everyone in Greece is indexed by their own name and the names of their parents.
We also need other information from you that is needed to complete the form, occupation, address, date of marriage (if any) but we can gather that information whilst you are here.
We can carry out this process at any time, either before or during your visit. If you are reasonably certain that you are going to buy a property, we can apply for a tax number on your behalf before you arrive, if you fax or email copies of the documents to us. Since we are in the tax office every week, we do not charge for this service and it does not bind you to us in any way.
